Unfortunately the church can be a cruel place not because of God but because of people with their own ideas and agenda. I went through the exact same thing as your husband and I know what it is like to be so disillusions and broken that the very voice of God is blocked by the anger and pain. I don’t know why it is that people don’t seem to understand that people doing God’s work have feeling too and are not super-human. Fact is we are all human suffering from the human condition and the fall of man. I think we should all teach, preach, and love people more from a human perspective and not so much from such a grandiose spiritual perspective. Can we really know the mind of God so clear that we can pronounce judgment, and damnation of a fellow human being? I wish I knew your husband when he went though his pain. If she was in such a dysfunctional place God probably isn't leading her back... at least not to that church. We need to remember that being a part of the body does not mean that we HAVE to go a dysfunctional church led by a person that is abusive just for the sake of going to church. Would we advise her to stay in an abusive and hurtful relationship just for the sake of being married? You just need to guide her and love on her. There is no need to remind her of what she already knows. Chances are she knows exactly what is up. The one problem I see is that some do not "LISTEN" for the voice of the Lord. They have allowed their ears to become deaf to Him. I know when my husband quit the ministry we were shunned! That pain was just too deep for Him... one thing led to another until He didn't want to hear God's voice or even accept His love. I do believe we should go and seek those who have been deeply wounded and turned their backs on God's call on their life. One human being is as valuable as another.
